For this project I intend to explore the history of mental asylums, particularly in 1960. I analyse the patients of such mental institutes and compare them to people suffering from similar disabilities in modern day. From this research, I intend to produce a set of images and supporting text that work together to challenge the ideologies of psychology from the 1960's. In particular I will touch upon how people effected by these mental illnesses were treated by family, neighbours and the media. From first look into researching this theme I have already come across painter Richard Dadd, and the film 'Sybil' which should help me to begin further research.

I will use this blog to present my the my finding via Primary and Secondary research. I will also use it to conclude what I have found and how I will apply it to my practice.

Project Proposal

Unit: NARRATIVE FPHO5004

1.AIMS: SUBJECT, TREATMENT

For this project I intend to explore the history of mental asylums, particularly in 1960. I analyse the patients of such mental institutes and compare them to people suffering from similar disabilities in modern day. From this research, I intend to produce a set of images and supporting text that work together to challenge the ideologies of psychology from the 1960's. In particular I will touch upon how people effected by these mental illnesses were treated by family, neighbours and the media. From first look into researching this theme I have already come across painter Richard Dadd, and the film 'Sybil' which should help me to begin further research.
2. SKILLS AND RESOURCES REQUIREMENTS

To enable me to complete this project I will need to develop a strong understanding of past mental institutions, how they worked. I expect myself to discover patients of such institutions in order to provide understanding of their scenario's so that I can represent them in my photography. To do this I will have to do research outside of the University Library, contacting institutions that would allow me access to resources to build my research. Institutions could include:

  • National Archives; Kew Gardens
  • Existing Hospitals for the mentally insane; Broadmoor.

Furthermore, depending on the direction my photographs take I will need access to either one of the photography studio's or environments of existing or pre-existing mental institutions. I will also need to develop on my digital skills in order to produce both the print and digital outcomes required for this project. This could mean developing my skills in projection, film, installations or virtual galleries dependent on my outcome.
3. OBJECTIVES AND OUTCOMES

With reference to Assessment Requirements and Learning Outcomes for this project, specify what you intend to achieve by the end of the unit and what you hope to have learned.

By the end of this unit I intend to have produced a set of 15 – 20 images with supporting text that contradict mental disabilities of modern day and how they were perceived in 1960's mental institutions. I also intend to have created some sort of digital medium that could work alongside my images to enhance awareness of this subject.

I hope that I have experimented with the different techniques of production, in particular the means of altering the outcome of the image before the shutter is open. Such as playing around with stroboscope photography and the effect of partially blocking the lens. I would also like to have experimented with the most production, but not in it's most obvious sense (digital editing). I hope to have played around with the use of collage to reinforce the meaning i'm trying to portray.
