'Sybil' is an american movie based on the book of the same name. It features a grade school teacher played by Sally Fields whose life turns around when she develops a multi-personality disorder. The movie touches upon the relations of blackouts and hysteria which are often disorder symptoms and also makes reference to bad memories that form disorder itself.
What I found most interesting about the film was the representation of how the disorders were portrayed in the time frame it was set. It shows how the people effected are isolated and subjected from society.
Also interesting was the way that the actress who plays Sybil presents herself to the consumer. I noticed that she tends to cover her face a lot like she is scared, like she is trying to hide herself away. The covering herself causes shadows which although helps to cover the face it also tends to exaggerate the emotion. In a way as well, having half of the face covered by shadows links back to the idea that there is more than one personality; half the face for the good side, half for the bad. This also relates to Propp's theories of good and bad, white and black.
For this project I intend to explore the history of mental asylums, particularly in 1960. I analyse the patients of such mental institutes and compare them to people suffering from similar disabilities in modern day. From this research, I intend to produce a set of images and supporting text that work together to challenge the ideologies of psychology from the 1960's. In particular I will touch upon how people effected by these mental illnesses were treated by family, neighbours and the media. From first look into researching this theme I have already come across painter Richard Dadd, and the film 'Sybil' which should help me to begin further research.
I will use this blog to present my the my finding via Primary and Secondary research. I will also use it to conclude what I have found and how I will apply it to my practice.
